Spanish is a Romance language with origins in the northern area of Spain.  Spanish is spoken by approximately 500 million people(native and non native), which makes it the fourth most spoken language in the world. It is spoken most extensively in the Americas and Spain.  It is the second most widely spoken language in the United States. Spanish uses the Latin writing system and is sometimes referred to as "Castilian" which refers to the Kingdom of Castile where the language gradually spread as it evolved.
