Chinese is a language spoken by close to 1 billion people ; that's 1/5 of the world's population! Chinese is a very complex langauge with many different "langauges" falling into the category. Mandarin is the most popular being spoken by 180 million people. Cantonese is also popular, and is spoken by 70 million people.  There are 13 sublanguages of Chinese. Standard Mandarin is the national langauge of The People's Republic of China and The Republic of China (Taiwan). It is also one of four offical langauges of Singapore and one of six languages of the United Nations.  The Chinese language is based on the Chinese writing system, and is part of the Sino-Tibetan language family.
